Old-World Yuletide TraditionsSalzburg and Vienna![]() December 5-13, 2009 (9 days) Join us for this festive celebration of Austria’s old-world Yuletide season. In magnificent Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for The Sound of Music, stroll through traditional Christmas markets in the city’s charming medieval quarter. Vendors display finely-made handicrafts as the crisp winter air carries the sound of holiday carols and the aroma of freshly baked gingerbread, roasted chestnuts, and hot apple strudel. Sip hot mulled glühwein (glowing wine) as a storyteller spins yarns and delight in nostalgic melodies in the church where Silent Night was first performed nearly 200 years ago. Drive through the picturesque Wachau Valley to Vienna and ride a private, antique trolley through streets filled with holiday pageantry, and then, bake Christmas cookies in Schönbrunn Palace. This custom-designed itinerary includes exclusive excursions to the castles and palaces of Salzburg, the 900-year-old Abbey of Melk, and the glorious imperial monuments of Habsburg, Vienna. Cultural enhancements, including specially arranged performances of Christmas music and a celebratory Heurigen evening at a traditional winery, will complete your Austrian Yuletide experience. Accommodations are in the historic, deluxe Hotel Altstadt in Salzburg and in the deluxe Vienna Marriott in the heart of Vienna. ![]()
