Explore the cultural heart of Japan on a journey that begins in the ancient imperial capital of Kyoto and explores the art, tradition, and enchanting lands of this island country. You’ll visit Ryoan-ji Temple, the Golden Pavilion, and Nijo Castle. Along the way, you’ll meet a master calligrapher who will explain his craft and give you an opportunity to try this graceful art. Visit Nara, Japan’s first capital, and the Todai-ji temple known for its bronze statue of Buddha. Spend a night at a traditional temple lodge in an important Buddhist enclave established 1,200 years ago — a truly unique experience! Take a scenic drive through the mountains to admire the 250 traditional thatched-roof houses in Miyama and travel to Kurotani to watch artisans make washi — a delicate Japanese paper-making tradition preserved for 800 years.     Daily Itinerary

  1. arrive in Osaka, Japan.
  2. travel to Kyoto. Stay at the Kyoto Tokyu hotel. Attend a welcome reception and dinner.
  3. see highlights of Kyoto. Attend a traditional tea ceremony and discover chado the way of tea.
  4. visit Heian Jingu, Nijo Castle, and the Kyoto Handicraft Center. Watch a master of calligraphy explain shodo, the art of writing.
  5. see Nara and the Todai-ji temple.
  6. get a glimpse of modern monastic life. Before breakfast, join the monks for morning prayers. Spend the morning exploring the rest of Koya-san. After lunch, return to Kyoto.
  7. visit Miyama and Kurotani. Explore Miyama on your own.
  8. pursue your own interests in Kyoto. Attend the farewell reception and graduation ceremony.
  9. transfer to the Osaka airport for a flight home.
