A
land of archaeological, cultural, and natural treasures, Peru
entices those who are eager to discover her fascinating present,
built upon colonial and indigenous influences. The tour takes in
some of the country’s most recognizable attractions — Cusco, Machu
Picchu, and Lake Titicaca — as well as the riches of intriguing
sites and highlights found off the beaten path. Begin in the
Peruvian capital of Lima with a city tour and a visit to the Rafael
Larco Herrera Museum, known for its fine gold and silver collection
from ancient Peru. You’ll fly to Cusco — the archaeological hub of
the Americas — and tour the city that once was the center of the
Incan empire. After you acclimate to the high altitude, your
Peruvian journey takes you to the beautiful Sacred Valley, located
in the Andes Mountains. During the height of the Incan empire, the
Sacred Valley was highly regarded for its geographical location and
climate, and was a prime area for maize production. At the southern
end of the Sacred Valley, you’ll visit the bustling Indian market at
Pisac. The tour preceeds to the Incan ruins at Ollantaytambo — home
to a monumental Incan complex called a fortaleza, or fortress. Then,
board the train for Machu Picchu — the stunning Lost City of the
Incas and a UNESCO World-heritage Site. Stay overnight, and take
advantage of prime sightseeing opportunities before the crowds
arrive. Travel by land through Peru’s rugged altiplano, or high
plateau — with its snow-capped mountains and remote villages —
before arriving at Lake Titicaca. Considered by many as the cradle
of Incan civilization, Lake Titicaca is the world’s highest
navigable lake. Next, take a boat ride to the Floating Islands and
Taquile Island, known for its superbly crafted textiles. A
five-day/four-night post-tour option to the Amazon rainforest is
available.
