Pamela Turbeville
At a time when very few women ascended the corporate hierarchy, Pamela J. Turbeville graduated from The University of Arizona with a double major in family and consumer sciences and education in 1972. Despite the odds, she has become a leader in her field, achieving the highest position possible in the male-dominated trucking and engineering field.
After four years of successful teaching experience and two more years as a curriculum developer and supervisor, Turbeville began work at Jeffrey Mine as an engineer in the Asbestos Fibre Division in safety and industrial engineering. At W.R. Grace, the principles and policies Turbeville put into place passed the tough litmus tests approved by the Federal Glass Ceiling Commission, Congress, the Secretary of Labor, and the President of the United States for promoting the advancement of women and minorities. Turbeville then steadily advanced to the position of CEO of the Navistar Financial Corporation and senior vice president of the Navistar/International Truck and Engine Corporation. She recently retired after 10 years of distinguished service to Navistar.
Turbeville supports the John and Doris Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences at the UA via the Pamela J. Turbeville Endowment in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences and designating funds to name the Student Service Center in the new McClelland Park Building. She is a trustee of Columbia College and a member of the Chicago Network, a group which is committed to the advancement of women. Turbeville also has served on the Catherine T. MacArthur School of Continuing Education Advisory Board and the Society for Human Resources Management.
The University of Arizona Alumni Association is honored to present the Alumni Achievement Award to Pamela J. Turbeville.
Kathryn L. Reed
Kathryn L. Reed arrived in New York City in the early 1970s, sure that she wanted to change the world but not sure how. She had earned a degree in philosophy from Pomona College in California and was working two jobs, one at a hospital in Harlem treating the underserved.
As she walked the streets of Manhattan thinking about her work, Kathryn had a revelation — she decided that her path to changing the world would have to begin with helping people become healthy, so they could take charge of their lives and contribute to society, too. She left New York and returned to her native Arizona to pursue a career in medicine, a journey that has since brought her academic and medical honors without dampening her commitment to change.
Kathryn graduated in the University of Arizona College of Medicine Class of ’77 and stayed in Tucson to complete her residency in obstetrics and gynecology and fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine. An early fascination with imaging technology drew her into obstetrical ultrasound, leading to worldwide attention for her pioneering work in fetal cardiac physiology and monitoring plus Doppler ultrasound, widely used throughout the medical community today.
Kathryn joined the college’s faculty in 1983, making great contributions to medicine through her research, teaching, clinical care, mentoring, and administrative work. She specializes in high-risk obstetrics and prenatal diagnosis and is an author and editor of two books, Fetal Echocardiography: An Atlas and Doppler Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and numerous articles published in scientific and medical journals. She now is a professor and head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Training Program at the UA College of Medicine.
Over the years, Kathryn has received numerous awards, including a first-place award from the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and an Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Excellence in Teaching Award.
She led the recent GRACE (Generating Respect for All in a Climate of Academic Excellence) research project that examined the causes of discrepancies in salary, advancement, and opportunities between male and female faculty at the UA College of Medicine.
Kathryn is a member of numerous local, national, and international committees and boards, and she is one of the most generous donors to the college’s projects that focus on cardiovascular and women’s health.
In summary, Kathryn is an alumna of the highest caliber who reflects the achievements, service, and ideals of the UA College of Medicine.
The University of Arizona Alumni Association is honored to present Alumni Achievement Award to Kathryn L. Reed.
